CHANGING LANDSCAPE & MARKET OVERVIEW
Helix Renewables • August 14, 2024

As we transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, the landscape is rapidly evolving.

EV registrations are up 40% year on year since 2023, with 16.6% of all new vehicle registrations now being BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with the number of public charging points now surpassing 66,779 across 34,570 UK charging locations. This represents a year-on-year increase of 46% in the number of public devices, with 21,042 installed since July 2023.

Solar energy is integral to the transition to a net-zero future, offering exceptional synergies with battery storage, electric vehicles, and smart grids. In recent years, the UK has witnessed significant growth in the solar sector, a trend that is expected to continue across both domestic and commercial markets. According to the Solar Trade Association (STA), the UK's solar capacity grew by an impressive 19% in 2023, adding over 2.5 GW of solar power to the national grid.

Our partnership with Park Garage Group (PGG) continues to strengthen as we recently designed and installed a Multi Service Distribution Board (MSDB), powered by a new LV cable adopted by Eclipse Power Networks at PGG’s new offices in Croydon. We were contracted by PGG to install a suitable LV supply to their new offices. Helix assessed the buildings power requirement and went on to install the new supply. Part of this works required a new UKPN LV main undertaken by Sinewave directly to UKPN, crossing one of Croydon’s busiest roads into a new Link box, which then connected to the building’s main supply.

We know people might feel overwhelmed by all the special "days" out there, but here at Helix, we believe this one deserves attention. This week, we celebrated the launch of our first EV supercharger rollout in partnership with Park Garage Group Plc , and the timing couldn't be better. World EV Day™ is designed to bring together companies, individuals, policymakers, and thought leaders from around the globe. This year, we ask all our friends across the UK how they will #DriveChange to continue supporting the shift to a decarbonised society. It’s a day of announcements and actions that drive progress toward a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future—values we wholeheartedly support. So, Happy EV Day to all our friends, clients, and colleagues! Learn more at World EV Day. https://www.worldevday.org/

Over the next 12 months, we are set to launch several exciting new initiatives in the EV market. Our primary focus is the rollout of 480 kW hyper electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Park Garages. In addition, we have upcoming projects with Wightlink Ferries on the South Coast and Pugh’s Garden Centre’s in Wales. We will continue our collaboration with Project EV and Park Garages, with new sites onboarding in Rushden (Northampton), Thinford North (Durham), Sevenoaks (Kent), and Scholes near Cleckheaton (West Yorkshire). Park Garages operates 77 locations across the UK, and we’ve completed feasibility studies for all of them, prioritising areas with limited charging infrastructure and sufficient space for these advanced hyper chargers. We're also exploring the deployment of Project EV's 1MW MCS chargers for truck charging at larger Park Garage sites, with plans to expand this offering to other clients in the coming year.
